Republican Gov. Tate Reeves ahead of Brandon Presley in Mississippi’s governor race: Poll

Gov. ‍Tate Reeves Poised to Win Mississippi’s Governor Race

Get ready for an‌ exciting showdown in Mississippi’s upcoming governor race! Republican incumbent Gov. Tate Reeves is leading the pack, with a recent⁤ Mississippi Today/Siena College poll‍ showing him⁤ with 52% of likely votes. His Democratic opponent, ⁣Brandon Presley, is not far behind with 41% ‌of the votes. With 6% of voters still undecided, anything can happen!

A Battle of Political ⁢Titans

This race is one of the most highly anticipated events in the November general elections. In April,⁤ a previous poll showed Reeves⁣ ahead of Presley by ⁤a similar margin, but this latest⁢ survey reveals‌ a significant shift. Reeves is ⁤now on track to secure a‌ majority in the state, a remarkable achievement for the Republican governor.

Presley, a‌ distant cousin of the legendary Elvis Presley, is no stranger to ‍politics. While this is his first⁤ run for statewide office, he has‍ already served four terms as the Northern District Public⁣ Service Commissioner. ⁣His impressive political career began at the young age of 23 when he became the youngest mayor elected in Mississippi history, winning with an overwhelming 78% of ⁣the vote in his hometown of ‌Nettleton.

Reeves, on the other⁤ hand, is a seasoned campaigner. This is his‍ sixth statewide campaign, and he has a‍ long history in Mississippi ⁣politics. After serving as lieutenant governor alongside former Republican Gov.⁣ Phil Bryant, Reeves assumed the governorship in 2020. He made history himself ⁤by becoming the first‌ Republican state treasurer‍ in the early 2000s.

The Welfare Scandal⁢ Controversy

One issue that has captured the attention of ‌Mississippi voters is a multimillion-dollar welfare scandal that occurred during Reeves’ time as‍ lieutenant governor. According to the poll, a staggering 90% of likely voters are concerned about‍ this scandal.

Presley has⁢ not shied away‌ from attacking Reeves on this‍ front. He has called on the governor to return $1.7 million in‍ campaign contributions‌ that were ⁣allegedly linked to the welfare fraud scandal. The majority of these funds came from individuals who donated ⁤to organizations associated with the University of ⁤Southern Mississippi. In ⁢fact, in July 2022, ⁣a federal prosecutor even subpoenaed the university’s Athletic ‍Foundation for their ‍communications with former ‌Gov. Phil Bryant and other affiliates involved in⁣ the scandal.

Reeves,‌ however, has vehemently denied any involvement in the scandal and has distanced himself from the projects that received funding. The poll reveals that 45% of Mississippi voters ‍believe Presley would do ‌a‌ better job at tackling government corruption⁢ and⁣ the ⁤welfare scandal, while 43% still have faith in Reeves.

As‌ the race heats up, all eyes will be on Mississippi to see who will⁣ emerge victorious in⁢ this high-stakes battle for the governor’s seat.⁢ Stay tuned!
