President Joe Biden Appeals to Union Members Amidst Threat of Labor Strike
President Joe Biden is actively engaging with labor unions as a potential labor strike looms, posing a threat to both the economy and his 2024 reelection bid.
Biden’s recent outreach to labor unions comes in response to complaints filed by the United Auto Workers against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis regarding unfair wages and pensions. The union has also voted in favor of a strike at the Detroit Three automakers if their demands are not met by the expiration of their four-year contract on September 14.
Focus on American Workers
In an opinion piece published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Biden emphasized that his economic policies aim to uplift American workers. He highlighted the success of his administration in creating new jobs, with 800,000 of them in the manufacturing sector.
“Wages and job satisfaction are up. Restoring the pensions of millions of retired union workers — the biggest step of its kind in the past fifty years,” Biden wrote.
Biden also criticized Republicans for their opposition to increasing the minimum wage and their attacks on unions. He pledged to continue making progress in these areas.
Challenges with Union Endorsements
While many prominent unions endorsed Biden during the 2020 election, including The American Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of State, AFL-CIO, County and Municipal Employees, he has faced difficulties securing endorsements from the UAW and Teamsters, both of which endorsed him in 2020 but have threatened strikes this year.
Concerns over Electric Vehicle Transition
Legislation passed this year to expedite the transition to electric vehicles has faced criticism from automobile manufacturers. They argue that the incentives provided will lead to job layoffs in the union sector.
UAW President Shawn Fain expressed frustration, stating, “Why is Joe Biden’s administration enabling this corporate greed with taxpayer money?” This statement followed the Energy Department’s announcement of a $9.2 billion investment in Ford to establish three major electric vehicle battery factories in collaboration with South Korean battery manufacturer SK Innovation.
The Teamsters narrowly avoided a strike in July, which would have been the largest single employer strike in U.S. history, with a majority of UPS workers voting in favor of striking.
While Biden garnered significant support from union members in 2020, declaring himself “a union man,” tensions have escalated on this year’s campaign trail due to concerns surrounding the transition to electric vehicles.
