Jimmy Buffett’s cause of death disclosed.
Legendary Singer Jimmy Buffett Passes Away at 76
The world mourns the loss of legendary singer Jimmy Buffett, whose cause of death was revealed on his website. The beloved “Margaritaville” singer-songwriter passed away at the age of 76.
“He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively,” a close friend told TMZ.
Battling Merkel Cell Skin Cancer
Buffett’s website released a statement disclosing that he had been battling Merkel Cell Skin Cancer since 2019. The singer passed away at his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island, surrounded by loved ones.
“He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July,” according to his obituary.
A Life Lived to the Fullest
Buffett’s friend revealed that the iconic singer was diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago, which eventually turned into lymphoma. Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that primarily affects older individuals with prolonged sun exposure and weakened immune systems, as stated by the Mayo Clinic.
Despite his health struggles, Buffett remained resilient and continued to perform. He even shared on social media in May that he had been briefly hospitalized after a trip to the Bahamas. In his message to fans, he emphasized that “growing old is not for sissies” and assured them that he would be healthy enough to perform again.
A Musical Legacy
Jimmy Buffett, known for his iconic hits like “Margaritaville,” “Cheeseburger In Paradise,” and “Come Monday,” captivated audiences for over 50 years. His music resonated with millions, and he amassed a devoted fanbase known as “Parrotheads.”
Buffett’s success extended beyond his musical career. He leveraged his music into a thriving business empire, including restaurants, bars, merchandise, and more. At the time of his passing, his net worth was estimated to be around $1 billion.
A Lasting Impact
On his Instagram page, Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to Buffett, reminiscing about their shared experiences on tour and in the studio. McCartney described Buffett as one of the kindest and most generous individuals he had ever known.
“Right up to the last minute, his eyes still twinkled with a humor that said, ‘I love this world and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it,'” McCartney said.
Jimmy Buffett’s music provided an escape for many, offering a carefree and laid-back vibe. In an interview, he expressed the importance of having fun and finding balance in life.
“I try to make it at least 50/50 fun to work, and so far it’s worked out,” Buffett shared.
Buffett’s legacy will live on through his timeless music and the memories he created for fans around the world. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and their three children, Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron.
In lieu of flowers, Buffett’s family has requested donations to be made to his foundation, Singing for Change, as well as Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, or the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
