Nikki Haley takes aim at aging politicians clinging to power.
GOP Candidate Nikki Haley Calls for Mental Competency Exams for Older Politicians
GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley is making waves with her proposal to mandate mental competency exams for older politicians. This comes after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent freeze during an event, which raised concerns about his fitness for office.
Last week, McConnell, who is 81 years old, experienced a period of freezing while taking questions from reporters. While some of his GOP colleagues believe he is fine, McConnell has been temporarily relieved of his duties in the Senate.
When Haley announced her presidential bid in February, she emphasized her support for mental exams for politicians aged 75 and older. She specifically mentioned McConnell, as well as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (83), President Joe Biden (80), and Senator Dianne Feinstein (90).

“I’m completely for mental competency tests for anyone over the age of 75, and I’m not saying that to be disrespectful,” Haley stated during an interview on CBS’s “Face The Nation.” She acknowledged the contributions of McConnell, Feinstein, and Pelosi but questioned when they should step aside and allow a younger generation to take over.
Haley believes that if the United States wants to improve its standing domestically and internationally, it cannot afford to have individuals clinging to power. She sees this as a congressional problem and emphasizes the need for term limits.
In addition to her call for mental competency exams, Haley also criticized the Senate, referring to it as “the most privileged nursing home in the country.” She believes that politicians should be able to answer basic questions about their personal lives and capabilities.
This incident is not the first time McConnell has experienced freezing in public. In March, he suffered a concussion and broke a rib after falling and hitting his head. However, McConnell’s office has stated that he has been cleared by his neurology team to continue with his schedule.
While McConnell’s freeze-up episodes raise concerns, his office attributes them to occasional lightheadedness associated with concussion recovery and dehydration. Despite these explanations, Haley’s proposal has sparked a broader conversation about the need for mental competency assessments in politics.
