Kentucky Gov.‌ Andy Beshear assured reporters that there is no need to discuss a replacement for Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), despite‍ concerns about⁢ his age and health. Gov.‍ Beshear ​believes​ that McConnell will serve out his ‍term, putting an end to speculation about a potential vacancy in the‌ Senate.

If a Senate seat​ does become vacant before the end‍ of a term, the‍ governor typically has the authority ⁤to choose a replacement, as outlined in‍ the‍ U.S. Constitution’s 17th Amendment. In Kentucky, the governor would‍ need to select from a list of three candidates provided by the state executive committee of the same party as the departing senator.
