TikTok enlists UK’s NCC to audit data security.
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – TikTok Hires British Cybersecurity Firm NCC to Strengthen Data Security
Concerns about TikTok’s data security have led to several government bodies banning the social media app from staff phones. In response, TikTok, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, has launched “Project Clover” to enhance its data controls and protections. As part of this initiative, TikTok has enlisted the services of British cybersecurity firm NCC to conduct an audit and provide independent verification.
TikTok is taking further steps to secure user data by establishing three data centers in Europe. Two centers will be located in Ireland, while one will be in Norway. The first Irish data center is already operational, and data migration has begun. By the end of 2024, all three centers will be fully functional, according to Elaine Fox, head of privacy in Europe. In the meantime, TikTok is storing personal data for European Economic Area (EEA) and UK users in a designated secure area called the European enclave, hosted temporarily in the U.S.
TikTok and NCC plan to engage with policymakers across Europe to provide insights into the system’s practical implementation. Project Clover was announced by TikTok in March as a response to mounting pressure from lawmakers on data security concerns.
