Marjorie Taylor Greene dismisses veepstakes competition with Kari Lake: ‘She’s not my rival’
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Denies “Death Race” Reports
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is vehemently denying reports that she is engaged in a fierce competition with failed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake to become former President Donald Trump’s running mate if he secures the GOP nomination next year.
“Kari Lake is not my opponent,” Greene stated in an interview with the Washington Examiner on Tuesday. “I’m actually excited to support her when she announces her candidacy for the Arizona Senate.”
Behind-the-Scenes Feud
These comments from Greene come in response to recent reports from Rolling Stone, which suggest a hidden rivalry between the two Trump allies as they vie for the coveted position of Trump’s running mate. While they rarely criticize each other publicly, sources claim that behind closed doors, Greene and Lake view each other unfavorably and consider themselves as direct competitors for Trump’s political affections.
“Lake is a grifter and [is] trying to keep riding Trump’s coattails because she lost [in Arizona], so she’s cozying up on the election-integrity messaging,” sources told Rolling Stone, quoting Greene’s opinion about Lake.
Meanwhile, Lake has privately speculated whether Greene has leaked negative information about her to the press in an attempt to damage her potential candidacy.
Long Shots for the No. 2 Spot
Both Greene and Lake have been mentioned as potential contenders for Trump’s ticket, but their chances are believed to be slim. Greene has consistently positioned herself as a staunch ally of Trump, defending him amidst legal troubles and criminal indictments.
“I would be honored [but] I think the last person that the [Republican National Committee] or the national party wants is me as his running mate,” Greene admitted to the New York Times.
Lake’s campaign, after winning the CPAC straw poll as the preferred vice presidential candidate, responded by humorously stating, “We’re flattered, but unfortunately our legal team says the Constitution won’t allow her to serve as Governor and VP at the same time.” This comment refers to Lake’s baseless claims of election misconduct in the Arizona governor’s race, which were ultimately dismissed in court.
Future Plans
In addition to the vice presidential speculation, Lake is also considering a run for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (I-AZ) seat, which could complicate her chances of becoming Trump’s running mate. As of now, there has been no response from Lake’s spokesperson regarding her plans.
