Enrique Tarrio receives record-breaking J6 sentence: Decades in prison.

Former Proud Boys Chairman Sentenced ⁣to 22 Years for Capitol Breach

The former‌ chairman of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for his involvement in the breach‌ at the U.S. Capitol on January⁤ 6, 2021. This marks the longest sentence⁣ to date in ⁤the Department of Justice’s handling of the case.

Tarrio, the son of Cuban immigrants, was⁣ found guilty of seditious conspiracy ‍by⁣ a federal jury in Washington, D.C., back in May. He was sentenced by Judge Timothy Kelly, facing a potential 33-year prison term.

“I am not a political zealot. Inflicting harm or changing the results of the election was ⁣not my goal,” Tarrio said before sentencing. “Please show me mercy. I ask that you not take my 40s away from me.”

Although Tarrio was not present in D.C. on the day of the ‍Capitol breach, prosecutors argued that he played a leadership role‍ in the Proud Boys and used his intelligence and charisma to radicalize followers.

The government relied on private communications from defendants involved in the breach to build their case against Tarrio and others. The charge ‍of seditious conspiracy is rare and difficult to prove,‍ but it has been successfully used by the ⁤DOJ about a dozen times in connection to the Capitol breach.

Defense lawyers maintained that there was no written⁣ evidence to support the claim that Tarrio conspired to stop the certification of‍ the 2020 election.

Alongside Tarrio, other Proud Boys members‍ and Oath Keepers have also been convicted of seditious conspiracy and received significant prison sentences. In total, over 1,100 people have been charged in connection to the Capitol breach.
