Small Business Owners Demand Action After Smash-and-Grab Attempt
Small business owners, including those at Meza’s Jewelry store in El Monte, California, are speaking out against the increasing number of smash-and-grab incidents that are impacting their livelihoods. They believe that authorities need to implement tougher policies to combat these crimes.
The attempted robbery at Meza’s Jewelry store on September 2 resulted in significant damage to the store, although no merchandise was stolen. The owners estimate that they lost around $10,000 to $15,000 due to broken display cases and other damages.
One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their determination to protect their hard-earned business. They stated, “We’ve been working so hard for this, so we’re not going to let anyone grab our stuff and just take it like that.”

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the El Monte Police Department. The suspect entered the store and pepper-sprayed the staff before smashing the display cases with a hammer.
Witnessing the chaos, the employee quickly locked the door, fearing that more individuals might join the robbery. Surveillance footage captured the employees fighting back against the suspect, using a bat-like object to defend themselves.
Despite their efforts, the suspect managed to escape after shedding his t-shirt. However, the store’s security cameras have provided valuable evidence for law enforcement to identify the perpetrator.
El Monte Police Lt. Aram Choe expressed confidence in apprehending the suspect, thanks to the support of the community and the abundance of video footage. He also mentioned that the police have increased patrols in areas with jewelry and shoe stores, which are often targeted by robbers.
Alejandro Casillas, the owner of a music shop near Meza’s Jewelry, witnessed the aftermath of the break-in. He emphasized the burden placed on small business owners to defend themselves and called for elected officials to take action against these crimes.
Mr. Casillas revealed that his own store is equipped with security cameras, weapons, and pepper spray to protect against similar incidents.
As small business owners continue to face the threat of smash-and-grab robberies, they are demanding change and a stronger response from authorities to safeguard their livelihoods.
