Three U.S. airlines warn of higher fuel costs in Q3 due to surge in crude prices
Three major U.S. airlines have issued warnings about the impact of rising crude oil prices on their fuel costs for the third quarter. Alaska Air Group has revised its pre-tax margin forecast downwards, while Southwest Airlines remains optimistic about achieving a solid profit. United Airlines, on the other hand, expects its capacity, operating revenue, and cost per available seat mile to align with previous guidance. The industry is already grappling with expensive labor contracts, adding to the pressures faced by these airlines.
Alaska Air now expects an adjusted pre-tax margin of 10% to 12% for the third quarter, lower than its previous estimate of 14% to 16%. The Washington State-based carrier has also revised its revenue growth projection to 1% to 2%, down from the earlier range of flat to 3%. Meanwhile, shares of Southwest Airlines have fallen by 4.3% before the market opened.
