Trump seeks delay in NY civil trial amidst mounting legal issues.
Former President Donald Trump Requests Trial Delay for Trump Organization
Former President Donald Trump has asked a New York state judge to delay a trial that could have significant consequences for his family business, the Trump Organization.
Trump’s lawyers made a late request on Tuesday evening for Justice Arthur F. Engoron to postpone the start of Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James’s trial against his family business. The trial, which focuses on alleged bank and insurance fraud, is scheduled to begin on October 2nd. This trial marks the beginning of a busy season in court for Trump, as he also faces four separate criminal cases while campaigning for the 2024 presidency.
The filing requested the trial be “briefly” delayed until three weeks after Engoron rules on both sides’ requests for summary judgments, which seek decisions on various legal questions without the need for a trial to take place.
Trump’s attorneys argue that James ignored a June appeals court ruling that found some of her claims were based on transactions that fell outside the statute of limitations.
“A trial of this magnitude should not begin in chaos,” his attorneys wrote. “The court and the defendants are entitled to know the claims and issues to be tried sufficiently in advance to prepare adequately for trial.”
James’s office has also filed a separate request for legal sanctions against Trump and his two co-defendants, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. They argue that the defendants’ legal teams have repeatedly made “frivolous” arguments in the case.
The attorney general is seeking $250 million in damages overall, while Trump’s attorneys vehemently deny the charges and any wrongdoing on the former president’s part.
Trump is also facing the prospect of three criminal trials starting in March. These trials involve allegations of attempting to subvert the 2020 election, interfering in a Georgia racketeering case, and falsifying business records in New York to conceal hush money payments before the 2016 election.
When asked about the possibility of withdrawing from the 2024 race if prosecutors offered to drop the charges, Trump stated that he had “absolutely no interest.” He emphasized his belief that the individuals involved in the cases are corrupt.
