UMich to evict students who contract COVID
University of Michigan Requires COVID-19 Positive Students to Leave Dorms
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has recently confirmed that it will implement a new policy requiring students who test positive for COVID-19 to leave campus dorms and isolate in another location, including hotels.
According to University health officer Robert D. Ernst, students who test positive for the virus must “relocate to their permanent residence, stay with a nearby relative or friend, or find a hotel space.” This policy applies to all students, even those in single rooms.
Ernst also emphasized the importance of students creating an isolation plan in advance to ensure peace of mind.
This policy, which has been in place for several months, was recently highlighted by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a professor at Stanford University, who criticized the university’s approach on Twitter.
The university’s COVID-19 website provides detailed guidelines for reporting positive test results and creating an isolation plan. It also states that most isolation plans last around five days. Students residing in on-campus dorms are required to leave their residence halls during isolation.
The University of Michigan has confirmed that these measures are in place to address the rise in COVID-19 cases on campus and to prevent further spread of the virus.
While the university has not mandated masks on campus or in class, it remains unclear if masking will be reimplemented. However, other institutions and hospitals have recently reinstated mask mandates.
For students at the University of Michigan, the cost of tuition, living expenses, and other fees can reach up to $35,000 for Michigan residents and $76,000 for out-of-state students.
The University of Michigan’s approach to handling COVID-19 cases reflects the standard practices of isolation and quarantine used to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
