Suspect Jailed in Fatal University Heights Hit-and-Run
Avoiding Justice: Man Arrested Three Months After Fatal Hit-and-Run
SAN DIEGO—In a shocking turn of events, a 37-year-old man who had been on the run for three months after a fatal hit-and-run incident in University Heights has finally been apprehended. Brandon Allen Janik, a resident of San Diego, was arrested on September 5th in Hillcrest on suspicion of multiple offenses, including murder.
The incident occurred on June 10th at around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of Normal Street and El Cajon and Park boulevards. Joshua Gilliland, a 47-year-old pedestrian, was struck by a car and tragically lost his life. The vehicle, a 2022 BMW, was later identified as the one driven by Mr. Janik.

Despite his attempts to evade capture, detectives were able to gather enough evidence to link Mr. Janik to the crime. He now faces charges of murder, drunk driving, hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter, and making false insurance claims about a vehicle. Currently, he is being held without bail at San Diego Central Jail, awaiting his arraignment scheduled for September 7th.
