Baby’s eyes change color from brown to blue after COVID-19 treatment.
The Incredible Transformation: Baby’s Eyes Turn Bright Blue After COVID-19 Treatment
The brown eyes of a baby in Thailand turned bright blue overnight after receiving a COVID-19 medicine commonly used in the country.
The infant was prescribed favipiravir, a drug approved by the Thai government for babies with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms, according to the New York Post.
Several countries, including Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Kazakhstan, have also approved the use of this drug. Italy even granted it emergency approval in 2020, the year the pandemic struck.
Although the drug has received positive reviews in the U.S., it has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the country.
A case report on this astonishing incident was published in the April 2023 issue of the medical journal Frontiers in Pediatrics. Unfortunately, the specific date of the case was not provided in the study.
The study emphasized the importance of monitoring the use of favipiravir in children due to its potential side effect of corneal discoloration, which has not yet been fully understood in terms of long-term effects.
According to the study, other side effects such as diarrhea and temporary visual blurring have been observed with the use of this drug. Additionally, previous cases of unusual coloration have been reported.
The study revealed that favipiravir has been shown to cause fluorescence in human hair and nails, possibly due to the drug itself, its metabolites, or other tablet components. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor and report such cases to gain a comprehensive understanding of the potential effects of medication on corneal discoloration, especially among children.

According to the study, approximately 18 hours after the baby received the drug, his mother noticed the remarkable change in his eye color, which turned bright blue.
Fortunately, after about five days, the baby’s eyes returned to their normal color. The mother immediately stopped administering the drug upon noticing the eye color change.
The study reported that there was no apparent damage to the baby’s eyesight as a result of this incident.
This case was the second known instance of such an occurrence with this drug. In 2021, a 20-year-old man in India experienced a change in eye color after taking favipiravir. However, his eye color returned to normal the day after he stopped taking the drug.
Despite the potential for adverse effects, favipiravir remains the primary oral antiviral treatment for children with COVID-19 in Thailand, as stated in the study.
However, recent research has raised concerns about the safety and efficacy of favipiravir. The Prevent Severe COVID-19 study revealed that patients with COVID-19 should not be treated with favipiravir due to its lack of demonstrated efficacy in terms of time to sustained clinical recovery, progression to severe COVID-19, and cessation of viral shedding.
