Russian drone debris found in Romania: a serious violation.
Russian Drone Lands on Romanian Territory During Attack on Ukraine
Romanian officials announced on Wednesday that a potential Russian drone had landed on its territory during a Russian attack on Ukraine. The Defense Minister of Romania, Angel Tîlvăr, confirmed that debris from a possible Russian killer drone was discovered in Tulcea county, close to the Danube River. This incident comes just two days after Romania denied Ukraine’s claims of a Russian drone detonating on its territory.
Confirmation and Investigation
Tîlvăr stated, “We covered a very large area, including the area about which there were discussions in the public space, and I confirm that pieces were found that could be a drone.” Romanian President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that if the drone is indeed Russian, it would be a serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and territory. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Location and NATO Response
The drone debris was discovered in Plauru, Romania, a small village across the river from Izmail, where Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure. While officials did not insinuate that the drone was part of an intentional attack, Romania’s membership in NATO raises concerns. Under Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty, an armed attack against one member state is considered an attack against all. NATO has significantly increased its presence in the Black Sea region in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Claims and Aid from the West
Initially, Ukraine claimed that Russian drones had detonated on Romanian territory, a claim that Bucharest denied. However, Romania had been searching the area for debris for a few days. It is still too early to determine if Article 4 of NATO’s founding treaty will be invoked, which would allow member states to discuss the situation with allies. Meanwhile, the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, with Ukraine relying on support from the West, including aid from the Biden administration.
Note: In November of last year, a missile struck Poland, killing two people. It was later determined that the missile likely came from Ukrainian air defenses, not from Russia.
