DeSantis declares COVID mandates futile in Florida.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Rejects COVID-19 Mask and Vaccine Mandates
During a Thursday news conference, Governor Ron DeSantis made it clear that Florida will not be reimposing any COVID-19 mask or vaccine mandates. This announcement comes in response to some schools in other states bringing back mask mandates or recommendations for students, as well as colleges requiring vaccine booster shots and quarantine for infected students.
“Even today, parts of our country are forcing children to wear masks in the classroom,” Mr. DeSantis stated. “Those mandates are dead on arrival in Florida, and we will protect parents and children from this perpetual COVID hysteria.”
Standing Firm Against Mandates
Mr. DeSantis expressed his skepticism towards health officials and politicians who advocate for lockdowns and vaccine mandates, stating, “If you give these people an inch, they will take a mile.” The press conference featured various critics of vaccine mandates, including Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and individuals who opposed mandates due to personal health issues.
While Governor DeSantis closed down schools in March 2020 when COVID-19 cases first emerged, he later issued an order in July 2020 requiring them to reopen for in-person instruction. His approach to handling the pandemic has gained attention, making him a rising star among Republicans and a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
Florida’s Stance on COVID-19
As governor, Mr. DeSantis has passed laws prohibiting COVID-19-related mandates imposed by local governments and businesses. He has consistently emphasized that Florida’s policies are based on science, not narratives or agendas. Refusing to let “paranoid hypochondriacs” dictate health policies, Governor DeSantis remains committed to protecting the well-being of Floridians.
Opposition to Mask Mandates
While some hospitals, schools, and private businesses have reintroduced mask mandates, drawing criticism from Republicans and other groups, Governor DeSantis stands firm in his decision. Critics of mandates often cite studies suggesting that face coverings do not effectively prevent virus transmission.
For example, a school in Silver Spring, Maryland, recently reinstated mask requirements after confirming COVID-19 cases among students. Similarly, a few other schools, including one in Alabama, have mandated masks due to rising cases. However, Morris Brown College in Atlanta rescinded its mask mandate after two weeks.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has provided schools with more masks and COVID-19 tests, urging districts to review the CDC’s guidance on masks, which currently does not recommend them.
Florida’s Approach to School Mask Mandates
Florida’s ban on school mask mandates has spared children from the turmoil faced by students in other states. The DeSantis War Room on X (formerly known as Twitter) celebrated this decision, highlighting the contrast with the Silver Spring mask mandate.

This week, First Lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19, prompting President Joe Biden to wear a mask indoors again. However, he will remove his mask when sufficiently distanced from others.
Former President Donald Trump also released a video urging Americans to resist compliance with certain measures.
