Marjorie Taylor Greene proposes anti-mask mandate after Senate’s progress halts.
EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to Introduce Legislation Banning Federal Mask Mandates
Under the Freedom to Breathe Act, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene plans to introduce legislation that would prohibit the federal government from reimplementing mask mandates in response to a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. The proposed ban would specifically target mask-wearing requirements for students and travelers, including on airplanes, public transit, and in educational settings.
Pandemic Politics Returns to the Senate
Rep. Greene’s bill, shared exclusively with the Washington Examiner, aims to block federal officials, including President Joe Biden, from issuing orders that would enforce mask-wearing or deny services to individuals who refuse to wear face coverings. The legislation highlights the inconsistency in public health guidance, with Dr. Anthony Fauci privately admitting that masks were not effective while publicly advocating for their widespread use.
Furthermore, the bill would restrict federal funding for mask requirements and ensure that agencies revise their guidance to align with Greene’s legislation. These revised guidelines would need to be issued within 90 days of the bill’s enactment.
Rep. Greene’s proposal serves as the companion bill to similar legislation introduced by Sen. J.D. Vance in the Senate. However, Vance failed to secure unanimous support for a vote on the bill, leaving it stalled in the upper chamber. In contrast, the House version has already gained support from 13 co-sponsors.
While the bill’s passage remains uncertain, especially considering President Biden’s stance on mask mandates, the White House has emphasized that decisions regarding mask requirements should be left to individual schools and districts. This shift in responsibility reflects the growing politicization of public health measures, particularly as Republicans position themselves for the upcoming 2024 election.
Even President Biden himself has shown a more relaxed approach to COVID-19 protocols, choosing not to wear a mask at a recent White House event despite his wife, first lady Jill Biden, testing positive for the virus. Biden even joked about his maskless entrance, further highlighting the changing attitudes towards mask-wearing.
The renewed discussions on public health mandates coincide with a rise in COVID-19 cases nationwide, raising concerns about a potential resurgence in the fall and winter. However, it is important to note that current case numbers remain relatively low compared to previous years.
