Citizens’ 2nd Amendment Rights Suspended by Emergency Health Order
New Mexico Governor Takes Action to Address Gun Violence
In a bold move to combat gun violence, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued an emergency public health order that temporarily suspends the open and permitted concealed carry of firearms in Albuquerque for 30 days.
The governor, a Democrat, acknowledged that there may be legal challenges to her decision, but she felt compelled to act in response to recent tragic incidents, including the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor league baseball stadium just this week.
The temporary suspension of firearms is directly linked to the alarming rates of violent crime in the Albuquerque area. However, it’s important to note that the police are exempt from this ban, ensuring that law enforcement can continue to carry firearms.
Despite the anticipated challenges, Governor Lujan Grisham expressed her willingness to engage in a debate and fight for the safety of New Mexicans. During a news conference, she stood alongside prominent law enforcement officials, including the district attorney for the Albuquerque area.
The governor highlighted several recent shootings in Albuquerque, including a tragic road rage incident outside a minor league baseball stadium that claimed the life of 11-year-old Froyland Villegas and critically injured a woman. These incidents, along with the fatal shooting of 5-year-old Galilea Samaniego while she slept in a motor home, and the shooting death of 13-year-old Amber Archuleta in Taos County, have underscored the urgent need for action.
