Gov. Grisham bans gun carry in Albuquerque for 30 days to combat violence.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham Takes Action to ‍Address ‍Gun⁣ Violence

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) has implemented a 30-day ban on carrying firearms ⁤in public across Albuquerque and ⁢the surrounding⁤ county in response to a⁢ recent surge in gun violence. This bold move aims to protect the community⁤ and prevent further tragedies.

While the ban is in effect, individuals with concealed carry permits can still transport their firearms to specific private locations, such as gun ranges or stores, as long as the guns have⁢ trigger locks or other safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge. However, those ⁢who disregard these restrictions may face fines of up to $5,000, according to⁣ Caroline Sweeney, spokesperson for Lujan Grisham.

Addressing Concerns and Encouraging Debate

Gov. Lujan Grisham acknowledges that these restrictions will present challenges but believes they⁤ are⁢ necessary for the safety⁢ of New‌ Mexicans. She welcomes the debate and discussion on how to make the state a safer ‍place.

During⁢ a news conference, Lujan Grisham expressed her concerns about recent shooting deaths involving minors. The tragic incidents include ⁣the killing of 11-year-old Froyland Villegas outside Isotopes Park, a minor league baseball‌ stadium, and the‍ shooting ⁢of five-year-old Galilea Samaniego in the head by four teenagers at‍ a trailer park. Additionally, a⁣ 14-year-old boy fatally shot 13-year-old Amber Archuleta using his father’s gun.

Opposition and Legal Challenges

Republican state Sen. Greg Baca,⁢ the highest-ranking GOP‍ senator, strongly criticized Lujan Grisham’s 30-day ban. He ⁤argued that instead of targeting law-abiding citizens with⁤ an unconstitutional gun order, the focus should be on apprehending the‍ perpetrators responsible for these tragic incidents.

It⁤ is expected that legal challenges will arise against ⁤the ban, but Lujan Grisham remains resolute in her decision to take action.

This ban is not the first step ⁢Gov. Lujan ‌Grisham has taken to combat gun violence. Since ⁣2019, she‍ has signed legislation aimed at ‍restricting access to firearms. This includes the implementation of a “red flag” ⁢law in 2020, ⁢which allows ⁤law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms ‍from individuals deemed a threat to themselves ‌or others. The law also extends background checks to nearly all private gun sales and prohibits individuals under⁢ permanent protective orders for domestic violence from possessing firearms.

Gov. Lujan Grisham’s commitment to addressing gun violence demonstrates her dedication to the safety and well-being of ‍the people of New Mexico.
