Rashida Tlaib, House Democrat, to address significant anti-Israel event: ‘Treasonous’
Squad Rep. Rashida Tlaib to Speak at Controversial Conference
Representative Rashida Tlaib, a member of the “Squad,” is set to be a speaker at a national conference organized by the United States Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR). However, this coalition has faced criticism for its alleged links to Palestinian terror groups, as revealed in a flyer.
Tlaib’s appearance at the conference, scheduled for October 27-29 in Houston, Texas, has raised concerns due to USCPR’s reported fiscal sponsorship of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions National Committee. The campaign’s website accuses Israel of “apartheid,” “ethnic cleansing,” and “genocide.”
“It is anti-American and even treasonous for Tlaib to speak at a USCPR conference that falsely condemns America as an ‘imperialist,’ and aims to ‘mobilize action’ against America, Israel, Jews, and Jews on American college campuses,”
– President Morton Klein, Zionist Organization of America
President Morton Klein of the Zionist Organization of America has called on the Democratic Party leadership to publicly condemn Tlaib and demand that she not speak at this conference, which he describes as anti-American and anti-Semitic.
This news comes as Tlaib faces increased criticism from both Republicans and fellow Democrats for her anti-Israel positions. In May, Permanent Israel Representative to the United Nations Gilad Erdan accused Tlaib of “ignorance and hatred toward the Jewish people and the state of Israel” after she posted on social media about the “apartheid state of Israel” being born out of violence and ethnic cleansing.
Last September, many House Democrats, including Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Elaine Luria, Jerry Nadler, and Ritchie Torres, condemned Tlaib for alleging that “Israel’s apartheid government” does not align with “progressive values.” Tlaib also joined other left-leaning Democrats in boycotting Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s joint address to Congress, labeling Israel as “an apartheid state.”
USCPR, which raises funds through its U.S. charity called Education for Just Peace in the Middle East, has consistently criticized Israel’s efforts to combat terrorism. In August 2022, USCPR signed a statement opposing Israel’s designation of six Palestinian groups as proxies for the U.S.-designated terror organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The BDS National Committee, sponsored by USCPR, includes the Council of National and Islamic Forces in Palestine, which has members affiliated with U.S.-designated terror groups such as the Popular Front, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and Palestinian Liberation Front, according to various sources.
Jeffrey Berk, head of the pro-Israel advocacy group TruthTells, finds it “incomprehensible” that Tlaib would associate herself with USCPR and calls for her to be censured.
The conference will be held at the Hilton Houston Post Oak by the Galleria, a 4-star hotel, with regular admission costing $225 per ticket. Notably, the hotel is located just five miles from Congregation Beth Yeshurun, a conservative synagogue serving 2,000 families.
Other speakers at the USCPR conference include liberal activist Marc Lamont Hill, lawyer Diala Shamas, and Nida Abubaker, the daughter of Shukri Abu Baker.
Shukri Abu Baker, who incorporated the Holy Land Foundation, a defunct nonprofit group shut down by the U.S. government in 2001 for funding the terror group Hamas, was sentenced to 65 years in prison in 2009 for conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
“Seize the Moment! Together we’re building toward a vibrant future where all people can be free, in defiance of Israeli repression and U.S. imperialism,”
- USCPR conference description
The USCPR conference aims to gather in solidarity with the Palestinian people who have been resisting what they describe as 75+ years of ethnic cleansing. The conference’s website invites attendees to join the movement against Israeli repression and U.S. imperialism.
Requests for comment from Tlaib’s office and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights have gone unanswered. Similarly, a spokesman for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not responded.
