In response to host Chuck Todd’s question about whether Newsom himself would consider running for president, Newsom emphasized that the vice president is the natural successor and that the filing deadlines are approaching. He urged Democrats to move past the speculation that Biden may not run, as Biden has already announced his intention to seek a second term.
Newsom dismissed concerns about Biden’s candidacy, stating, “President Biden is going to run, and looking forward to getting re-elected. I think there’s been so much wallowing in the last few months, and hand-wringing in this respect. But we’re gearing up for the campaign. We’re looking forward to it.”
When asked about those who speculate about Biden not running, Newsom simply replied, “Time to move on. Let’s go.”
Newsom’s remarks echo his previous comments to The New York Times, where he stated, “‘The train has left the station. We’re all in. Stop talking. He’s not going anywhere. It’s time for all of us to get on the train and buck up.'”
Regarding Vice President Kamala Harris, Newsom expressed his support, saying, “It’s the Biden-Harris administration.” He emphasized their longstanding relationship, having known Harris before their political careers and having worked together when he was mayor of San Francisco and she was district attorney.
Newsom firmly stated that he would never run against Harris, saying, “Of course not. By definition. Won’t happen.”
When asked about Harris’s reaction to his upcoming debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Newsom acknowledged that someone in her office may be upset, but he has not heard any concerns directly from her or the White House.
In a separate interview, Harris indicated that she would run if Biden does not, further fueling speculation about the 2024 election.
