The North Korean hackers targeted various cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, and Bitcoin, according to the FBI statement.
Edward Craven, co-founder of Stake, revealed that the hackers exploited a vulnerability in the authorization function for cryptocurrency transactions, resulting in a sophisticated breach.
Despite the theft, the online casino remains operational. However, the prospects of recovering the stolen digital currency are slim, as North Korea does not participate in the international financial system or comply with Western court rulings.
The FBI is determined to combat the illicit activities of the DPRK, including cybercrime and virtual currency theft. The agency warns internet users against engaging with cryptocurrency wallet addresses associated with the hackers.
In 2023 alone, the Lazarus Group has stolen a staggering $200 million in cyberspace, highlighting the extent of their criminal activities. According to Vice News, the group has amassed over $1 billion through hacking, with notable incidents such as the 2014 Sony Pictures hack.
These thefts are believed to fund the North Korean regime, including its dangerous nuclear weapons program. In a concerning development, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is set to meet with Russian officials, potentially providing weapons for Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine.
