Newsom plans to appoint an interim replacement for Feinstein if her seat becomes vacant.
Gov. Gavin Newsom Considers Interim Appointment for Sen. Dianne Feinstein
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has revealed that he would consider making an “interim appointment” for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) if her Senate seat were to become vacant. This announcement comes in addition to the three Democrats currently running for the oldest serving senator’s seat.
“Yes. Interim appointment. I don’t want to get involved in the primary,”
– Gov. Gavin Newsom
During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Newsom expressed his reluctance to interfere in the ongoing primary race. He emphasized his desire to avoid tipping the balance and being unfair to the Democrats who have been working hard in the campaign.
Feinstein, who is 90 years old, has faced health complications from the shingles virus earlier this year. Newsom acknowledged the possibility of her stepping down and admitted that he is personally invested in the matter.
Feinstein had previously announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024 but would complete her current term in office.
Among the Democrats vying to replace Feinstein are Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Katie Porter (D-CA). Schiff, who faced censure from House Republicans in June, is currently leading in the polls with 20% support according to a Berkeley IGS poll. Porter follows with 17% support, while Lee has 7%.
Newsom has made a promise to choose a Black woman to fill Feinstein’s seat if it becomes vacant. Supporters of Barbara Lee are hopeful that Newsom’s pledge will lead to her nomination as the sole Black woman candidate.
“We hope we never have to make this decision. I abide by what I’ve said very publicly on a consistent basis.”
– Gov. Gavin Newsom
Newsom commended Feinstein’s staff for their exceptional work and wished her the best. He also mentioned that he is not enthusiastic about making another Senate appointment, as he has already appointed Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) to succeed Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020.
“I don’t want to make another appointment, and I don’t think the people of California want me to make another appointment.”
– Gov. Gavin Newsom
