Biden: No Desire to ‘Contain’ China
President Joe Biden Prioritizes Strengthening Ties with China
During a press conference in Hanoi, Vietnam, President Joe Biden emphasized his commitment to fostering a positive relationship with China and dispelled any notions of isolating the country. He made these remarks after attending a G-20 summit in India, which Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend.

President Biden clarified that his trip aimed to strengthen cooperation between the United States and India, as well as Vietnam. He expressed his desire to establish a stable foundation in the Indo-Pacific region and establish international guidelines for ocean, airspace, and space-related matters.
While President Biden supports China’s economic success, he emphasized the importance of adhering to international rules and regulations. He wants to ensure that China’s achievements are attained through fair and transparent means.
However, not everyone agrees with President Biden’s approach. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized Biden’s message, stating that it did not convey deterrence and failed to address potential threats to Taiwan and the South Pacific Sea.
Prior to President Biden’s visit to Vietnam, Beijing expressed disapproval of the United States’ handling of its relationships with China’s neighboring countries. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged the U.S. to abandon a Cold War mentality and prioritize regional peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
During the press conference, President Biden emphasized the need to move away from Cold War thinking and highlighted his non-confrontational conversation with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. He expressed his hope to meet with President Xi Jinping in the near future.
