The Battle for Iowa: Trump and DeSantis Face Off at College Football Matchup
The highly anticipated college football matchup between Iowa University and Iowa State on September 9th not only showcased the fierce rivalry on the field, but also served as a battleground for the top two Republican presidential contenders: President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Both candidates recognized the importance of winning over voters in Iowa, as the state’s primary caucus holds significant weight as the first presidential contest in the nation.
President Trump watched the game from a private suite, while Gov. DeSantis sat alongside popular Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds in the stands.

But they weren’t the only presidential candidates in attendance. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson also made an appearance at the game.
As President Trump entered the stands, the crowd’s reaction was mixed. Some applauded and cheered, while others booed and even made vulgar gestures towards the former president. A plane flew overhead with a banner questioning the whereabouts of Melania Trump, highlighting the complex political landscape of the state.
Outside the stadium, protestors dressed as masked versions of President Trump and Dr. Anthony Fauci, symbolizing the ongoing debate over COVID-19 policies during the Trump administration. This issue has become a focal point of Gov. DeSantis’s criticisms of President Trump.
Despite the mixed reception, President Trump remains the clear frontrunner among Republican voters in Iowa. Polls from FiveThirtyEight consistently show him leading by double-digit margins.
President Trump even made a surprise appearance at a fraternity tailgate, where he was met with enthusiastic cheers and chants of ”Trump, Trump, Trump.” Reflecting on the youth’s support, he jokingly remarked to a reporter about his popularity among young voters.
While President Trump has chosen to avoid dedicated political events during this campaign, his absence from the first Republican primary debate had little impact on his standing in the polls, particularly in Iowa.
On the other hand, Gov. DeSantis has taken a more traditional approach to his presidential campaign. The football game was just one stop on his journey to visit all 99 counties in Iowa, a crucial primary state.
Prior to the game, Gov. DeSantis attended Iowa’s annual firefighter association convention, where he expressed his appreciation for first responders and promised to prioritize their needs as president.
At the tailgate, Gov. DeSantis spoke with the media, expressing confidence in his grassroots efforts and emphasizing that Iowans want a candidate focused on the future, rather than dwelling on past issues.
“Iowans don’t want the campaign to be about the past or to be about the candidates’ issues,” he stated. “They want it to be about their future and the future of this country. And that’s what I represent: a candidate who will send Biden back to his basement and deliver on the needs and aspirations of the American people.”
