Minjee Lee triumphs over Charley Hull in Kroger Queen City playoff.
Minjee Lee Claims Victory in Kroger Queen City Championship
In a thrilling showdown at the Kenwood Country Club in Cincinnati, Minjee Lee emerged as the champion of the Kroger Queen City Championship. On Sunday, September 10, the Australian golfer showcased her skills and determination, ultimately defeating Charley Hull in a gripping playoff.
Lee’s final-round performance was nothing short of impressive, as she carded a solid 71 to finish at 16-under 272 through 72 holes. Hull, hailing from England, matched Lee’s score with a commendable 69, setting the stage for an intense playoff.
The playoff began with both players replaying the par-4 18th hole, where they both made par. On their second attempt at the 18th, Hull’s approach shot landed safely on the green. However, Lee’s shot from the rough was nothing short of extraordinary. Her ball bounced onto the green and settled just 3 feet away from the cup, putting her in an advantageous position.
“I think I had a few moments where I was like, I really felt like I was losing, but I wasn’t,” Lee said. “The score was, we were pretty much tied. I was like, ‘Let’s just play till the end and see where it ends up.’ So I didn’t give up, I just played every shot to the best I could.”
With nerves of steel, Hull missed her birdie putt, while Lee confidently tapped in her birdie, securing her first LPGA title since the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open.
Reflecting on her victory, Lee expressed her satisfaction with her performance and her excitement for future tournaments. She mentioned that this tournament served as a great opportunity to reset her goals and prepare for the upcoming Asia swing and the CME Group Tour Championship.
Lee had held a two-stroke lead after 54 holes and extended her advantage with birdies on the second, seventh, and eighth holes on Sunday. However, a costly double bogey at the par-5 12th brought her back to the pack. Despite the setback, she remained resilient and parred the remaining holes, allowing Hull to catch up with three consecutive birdies at Nos. 14–16.
China’s Ruoning Yin secured a respectable third-place finish at 14 under, while Ally Ewing, the winner of last year’s edition, settled for fourth place at 12 under after a final-round 66.
The leaderboard also featured a notable tie for fifth place at 11 under, including Mel Reid of England, Mi Hyang Lee of South Korea, Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, Japan’s Yuka Saso, Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux, and Peiyun Chien of Taiwan.
