MTG suggests secession for border security.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls for Secession Amid Border Crisis
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made a bold statement on Monday, urging states to consider seceding from the United States due to what she calls an “invasion” at the southern border. In a passionate social media post, she expressed her concern over the Biden administration’s handling of the cartel-led human and drug trafficking crisis.
“If the Biden admin refuses to stop the invasion of cartel-led human and drug trafficking into our country, states should consider seceding from the union. From Texas to New York City to every town in America, we are drowning from Biden’s traitorous America last border policies.”
Greene’s Push for Change
This is not the first time Rep. Greene has advocated for significant changes within the union. She has previously called for a “national divorce” between states that lean Democrat and those that lean Republican. In a recent social media post, she highlighted the need to prevent the same issues that have plagued states like California from affecting other great states like Florida.
Strains on Resources and Crowding
Greene’s comments come at a time when cities across the country are grappling with the strain on resources and overcrowding caused by the influx of illegal immigrants. New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently announced a 5% budget cut across all agencies to address the costs associated with the city’s growing immigrant population.
“We are in the middle of a humanitarian crisis involving asylum-seekers, a crisis that will cost our city $12 billion over three fiscal years,” Adams stated. “While our compassion is limitless, our resources are not.”
Chicago is also facing a similar situation, with Mayor Brandon Johnson estimating that the surge of immigrants will cost the city approximately $255 million by the end of 2023.
It’s important to note that only a fraction of the immigrants who have crossed the southern border and been released have been transported to cities. Texas, through Operation Lone Star, has transported under 40,000 immigrants to “sanctuary” locations, leaving approximately 2 million immigrants whose whereabouts are unknown.
Criticism of the Biden Administration
President Joe Biden has faced criticism for his handling of the border crisis. He has only visited the southern border once since taking office, relying on Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the administration’s approach. Republicans have voiced their dissatisfaction with Harris’s performance, arguing that a more hands-on approach, including frequent trips to the border, is necessary.
In May, the Biden administration ended Title 42, a pandemic-era policy that allowed for the turning away of immigrants from countries with a high presence of COVID-19. This decision faced opposition from Republicans and border-state Democrats, who called for a more thought-out plan rather than an abrupt end to the policy.
As the debate over border security and immigration continues, it remains to be seen how states and the federal government will address the ongoing challenges.
