Trump requests recusal of Obama-appointed Judge Tanya Chutkan from 2020 elections case.
Former President Donald Trump Seeks to Remove Judge in Federal Criminal Case
Former President Donald Trump is making a bold move in his federal criminal case regarding the subversion of the 2020 election results. He is seeking to remove the judge presiding over the case, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, whom he believes may be biased against him.
Trump’s lawyers argued in a Monday filing that Judge Chutkan, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, should recuse herself from the case due to past statements that they claim make her appear biased. They argue that her previous suggestions of prosecuting and imprisoning President Trump, made before this case began and without due process, are inherently disqualifying.
The case, brought against Trump in August by special counsel Jack Smith, also includes charges related to alleged mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
