Mayorkas addresses NYC Mayor’s concerns on migrant crisis in a ‘broken’ system.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas expressed frustration on Monday⁤ with the current state of the immigration system in‌ response to concerns raised by New York City ⁢ Mayor Eric Adams about the migrant crisis.

CNN⁤ played a⁣ clip for Mayorkas⁣ of Adams, a Democrat, voicing his concerns last week about the impact of hosting over 110,000 asylum seekers in New ⁢York City, stating that it would “destroy” the city. This issue has been exacerbated⁤ by red states transporting migrants to blue cities in an attempt to⁣ alleviate‌ the burden on their own border communities and challenge “sanctuary” policies.

“First and foremost, we’re dealing with a broken immigration system —⁤ a fact that everyone agrees on. It’s one of the few things that there is unanimity of views about. And ⁤we⁣ need‍ Congress to take‌ action, that’s number one,” Mayorkas explained.

“Number two,⁢ within that broken ‌immigration system, we are facing an ‌unprecedented level ⁤of displacement in the western hemisphere on a historic scale,” he added.

“We have responded with a⁣ model approach that has proven to work, which is to establish legal pathways for individuals to arrive in⁤ a safe ‍and orderly manner and to impose consequences for those ‍who do not comply,” Mayorkas stated.

Adams, citing the financial burden‍ on New York City to care for migrants, which amounts to ⁣$12‍ billion ⁢over⁣ the next three ‍fiscal years, announced over the weekend that he intends to make budget cuts in accordance with the law.

The mayor ⁢attributed his⁣ plan to the “inaction” in Washington and the ‌state ⁣government of New York,⁣ but he emphasized ⁣that they could still alleviate the situation by “paying their fair share and developing a strategy to ⁤reduce the pressure on New York⁤ City, so that we are not⁣ solely responsible for managing ‍this crisis.”

New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul revealed last month that the White House has committed to providing additional resources and sending⁢ officials from the ⁢Homeland Security⁢ Department to⁢ Manhattan to assist with the ‍migrant situation. ⁤Additionally, the ⁢Biden administration has⁤ requested $600 million in extra funds for the Shelter and Services Program,‌ and federal officials have reportedly reached out⁤ to ⁢migrants, urging ⁣eligible individuals to apply for work permits.

“We are working closely with the city of ‌New York,” Mayorkas assured during ⁤his CNN interview. “We have sent an assessment team here ⁤that has provided approximately 25 recommendations. We⁣ are implementing those recommendations. We will tackle ‌this together.”
