Poll: Majority of Americans Support Protection of Women’s Sports
Support for Allowing Transgender Athletes to Compete Against Women Declining, Gallup Poll Shows
A recent Gallup poll reveals that the support for allowing men to compete against women by claiming they are transgendered is on the decline. According to the poll, 69 percent of Americans believe that athletes should only play on teams that align with their gender at birth. This figure has increased from 62 percent in a 2021 Gallup survey.
The poll also found that the percentage of Americans who support allowing biological men to play against women has decreased. In 2021, 40 percent of Americans were in favor of this, but now it stands at 30 percent.
Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe that transgender athletes should have to compete on teams matching their biological sex.
Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs survey additionally found that a 55 percent majority of Americans believe changing genders is “morally wrong.”

The poll also revealed that 93 percent of Republicans and 67 percent of independents oppose the idea of men who identify as women playing on female teams. Additionally, 55 percent of those surveyed believe that changing one’s gender is morally wrong, up from 51 percent in 2021.
Gallup summarized its findings by stating, “It appears that Americans view transgender sports participation more through a lens of competitive fairness than transgender civil rights.”

Even among Democrats, who generally support LGBTQ+ rights and affirm the morality of gender change, there is division on the issue of transgender athletes participating on teams that match their gender identity. The survey found that Democrats are split on this matter.

Another poll conducted by Noble Predictive Insights aligns with Gallup’s findings. It shows that 67 percent of Americans oppose men competing against women in sports. However, among Democrats, there is some support for transgender athletes competing against women, particularly among ”strong Democrats.”
Mike Noble, founder and CEO of Noble Predictive Insights, stated, “The group driving that support are very left-leaning Democrats. It is pushed by Democrats on the left. Biden’s administration has really embraced it.”
The polls were conducted at different times, with Gallup’s survey taking place between May 1 and May 24, and Noble Predictive Insights’ poll conducted from July 31 to Aug. 3.
