Sports betting site faces backlash for highly insensitive 9/11 promotion.
One of the largest sports betting sites in the world faces backlash over insensitive 9/11 promotion
DraftKings, a leading sports betting site operating in states that allow online sports betting, regularly offers promotional deals and bets, especially during highly anticipated events like the NFL season kickoff.
Typically, these promotions are harmless and standard, such as profit boosts and “no sweat” bet tokens. However, DraftKings recently released a promotional offer that was anything but harmless or standard.
In a misguided attempt to “honor” the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, DraftKings offered a three-leg parlay featuring the New York Jets, the New York Mets, and the New York Yankees. The odds were set at +651, meaning all three bets had to win for the parlay to pay out. The promotion was aptly named “Never Forget,” a clear reference to the 9/11 attacks.
Unsurprisingly, sports bettors and observers were outraged by the insensitivity of the offer. The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest on American soil, and using that tragedy for a betting promotion was widely seen as inappropriate.

The backlash was swift and intense, leading DraftKings to quickly remove the offer. According to Front Office Sports, the promotion was taken down after several hours.
Following the retraction of the offer, DraftKings issued an apology to the Boston Globe, expressing regret for their decision. The sports betting app acknowledged the significance of the day and the impact it had on the families affected by the attacks.
Each leg of the promotional parlay had a direct connection to the 9/11 tragedy. The New York Mets were playing at home in Citi Field, located in New York City where the attacks occurred. The New York Yankees were traveling to Boston, where two of the hijacked planes departed. The New York Jets play near Newark International Airport, where one of the planes took off.
Currently, there are no 9/11-themed promotions or offers visible on DraftKings.
