Man walks into FBI office, confesses to 1979 Boston murder.
BREAKING NEWS: Man Confesses to Decades-Old Murder
BOSTON—In a shocking turn of events, a 68-year-old man walked into an FBI field office in Oregon and confessed to a heinous crime committed over four decades ago in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. Prosecutors revealed that John Michael Irmer, who had previously served time for another homicide, is now being investigated for an additional slaying. Irmer was arraigned on Monday in Boston and has been ordered to be held without bail until his next court appearance on October 17.
According to investigators, Irmer had been living as a free man for ten years after serving thirty years in prison for a murder in California. Last month, he approached FBI agents in Portland, Oregon, and disclosed that he had encountered a woman named Susan Marcia Rose with red hair at a skating rink just before Halloween in 1979.
A Brutal Crime Unveiled
Irmer recounted that he and Rose strolled through the Back Bay before entering an apartment building that was undergoing renovations at the time. It was there, moments after entering the building, that Irmer confessed to grabbing a hammer and fatally bludgeoning Rose. He then committed the unspeakable act of rape before fleeing to New York the following day.
Steven Sack, the attorney representing Irmer, acknowledged that his client would not contest bail but emphasized the significance of Irmer’s decision to turn himself in. “I would say on his behalf, he was a free man for 10 years. He walked into the police and confessed, allegedly,” Sack stated.
Remarkably, another man had been arrested and charged with the crime at the time but was ultimately acquitted in 1981. The discovery of Rose’s lifeless body in the building on October 30, 1979, revealed the cause of death to be severe head injuries, including skull fractures and brain lacerations.
Investigators obtained a DNA sample from Irmer, which remarkably matched DNA samples preserved from the crime scene. Rose, originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, had relocated to Boston and was residing on a nearby street at the time of her tragic demise.
Justice After 44 Years
“Nearly 44 years after losing her at such a young age, the family and friends of Susan Marcia Rose will finally have some answers,” expressed Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden in a written statement. “This was a brutal, ice-blooded murder made worse by the fact that a perpetrator remained at large for so long.”
