New York City’s Struggle with Migrants Puts Pressure on President Biden
New York City’s challenge of caring for approximately 110,000 migrants who have arrived in the city since last year is not only causing political repercussions for President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C., but also in other Democratic-run cities like Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia ahead of next year’s election.
“NYC’s policies have created a permissive environment where, unsurprisingly, migrants have fled to seek shelter,” said Republican strategist Lanhee Chen. “Even blue-state governors like Maura Healey in Massachusetts have decried the ‘crisis of inaction’ within the Biden administration when it comes to enforcement of federal immigration laws.”
“The confluence of bad policy and inaction has made for an incredibly toxic — and sad — mix that threatens NYC and other similarly situated cities across America,” he added.
While the White House cites legal constraints for its response, Republican governors have exacerbated the situation by sending migrants to places like Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, causing more people to travel to where their family and friends have been relocated.
Senator Dick Durbin, a high-ranking Senate Democrat, expressed his hope for action from President Biden, stating, “I wrote to him in May, so it’s been like four months. But I hope to find out.”
Former Democratic consultant Christopher Hahn believes that the federal government should bear the expense of dealing with immigration matters and that Biden should take immediate action to allow migrants to legally work.
The White House has defended Biden’s immigration policies, including efforts in New York City, and has coordinated with state and city officials to identify possible efficiencies in their operations. However, Biden’s average immigration job approval remains negative.
Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, has called on Biden to declare an immigration emergency, as the cost of migrants could reach nearly $12 billion over three years for the city. Adams has urged national leaders to step up and provide the necessary resources to prevent potential destruction.
Adams has faced criticism from more liberal Democrats, but he stands firm in his belief that the federal government must do its part to address the situation. He invites Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to witness the conditions firsthand and emphasizes the importance of getting it right to avoid the city’s potential downfall.
