California Assembly approves first-ever Transgender History Month.

The California ⁣State Assembly Passes Resolution to Declare August as Transgender History Month

The California State Assembly made ‍history on September 6th by passing House Resolution 57, introduced by Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), which declares August as Transgender History Month starting in 2024. This groundbreaking resolution⁢ marks the first of its kind in the United States.

“Trans people have existed and have always existed in ‌every era and in every culture. As long as there’s been the written word there has been a record of trans ‌people,” Mr. ⁢Haney said. “Let’s tell ‌the truth about transgender people’s lives,‌ and let’s lift up the history of ⁢the transgender Californians ‌who left their mark on our great state.”

Honey Mahogany, chair of San Francisco Democratic County⁤ Central Committee, expressed her ⁣support⁣ for the proclamation,⁣ stating that it ⁤will help combat ⁢the spread of‌ misinformation about the transgender community.

The resolution also highlights the historical significance of⁢ the 1966 Compton’s⁤ Cafeteria Riots, which occurred in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. These riots erupted when a transgender woman‌ resisted arrest by throwing ⁢coffee at a ⁢police officer. It is in honor of⁤ this event‍ that August⁢ was chosen as the designated⁢ month for Transgender History Month.

San Francisco became the ‍first ‍city to officially recognize August‍ as “Transgender History Month”‌ in 2021, thanks to Mayor London Breed’s proclamation. Following suit, Santa Clara County also adopted a similar recognition.

This resolution is not the ⁤first instance of California showing support for the transgender community. In 2018, former Governor Jerry Brown ratified a bill designating June as LGBT Pride Month, a ⁣celebration embraced by a global community. Since then, numerous⁢ local governments in the state ⁢have followed suit.

Furthermore, there are ongoing legislative initiatives in California to ‌support ⁣transgender individuals. Assembly Bill 957, for example, aims to ‍classify a parent who does⁣ not affirm or consent to a child’s assertions‍ regarding gender identity‌ as ‍committing ⁢child abuse. Additionally, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill last year that made ⁢California a ⁤refuge state for transgender children and their families,⁣ protecting them from legal repercussions in states that criminalize youth gender-affirming care treatments.
