Corona mother released from jail after allegedly fatally running over 6-year-old son.
A Tragic Incident: Mother Arrested for Son’s Death
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a Corona woman has been arrested for the death of her six-year-old son. The incident occurred last month when the young boy tragically fell into the roadway and was run over by his mother’s car as she drove away.
Melissa Damron, 42, now faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment causing death. Although she has posted $50,000 bail and been released from custody, the weight of this tragedy remains.
Details of the Incident
The Corona Police Department received a distressing call on August 22nd at approximately 7:55 a.m. The report indicated a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on the 1400 block of Sallie Jefferys Way.
Upon arrival, police discovered the victim, Duner Larson, in critical condition. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Investigation reveals that Ms. Damron allegedly locked her son out of the vehicle before driving away from their home. In a desperate attempt to reach his mother, the child chased after the car and tried to open the door. Tragically, Ms. Damron continued driving, causing Duner to fall into the roadway and be fatally struck by the car.
“Evidence showed Melissa knew Duner was close enough to the vehicle to present a hazard, and she drove with gross negligence, causing her son’s death,” police said in a Sept. 7 press release.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the case. If you have any additional information about this incident, please contact Officer Jake Westall at 951-817-5784 or via email at [email protected].
Past Incidents Raise Concerns
This devastating accident is not the first time Ms. Damron has been involved in a negligent vehicle incident with her children. In June 2022, she was pulled over for driving a black golf cart on California Avenue, where the speed limit is 25 mph. The officer also cited her for having unrestrained children, ages 4, 3, and 1, in the cart, according to court records.
Although Ms. Damron initially pleaded not guilty in the trial for this earlier incident, she was eventually found guilty in October 2022. She faced a fine of $727.
