Newsom highlights $267M investment to combat organized retail theft.
Gov. Gavin Newsom Announces $267 Million Investment to Combat Organized Retail Theft
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is making a bold move to tackle organized retail theft in the Golden State. With a staggering $267 million investment, Newsom aims to provide law enforcement officials with the resources they need to crack down on this growing problem.
“Enough with these brazen smash-and-grabs. With an unprecedented $267 million investment, Californians will soon see more takedowns, more police, more arrests, and more felony prosecutions,” Newsom said in a statement. “When shameless criminals walk out of stores with stolen goods, they’ll walk straight into jail cells.”
Boosting Law Enforcement Efforts
The recommended funding of $267,118,293 will be voted on by the Board of State and Community Corrections on Wednesday. If approved, it will be distributed to 55 law enforcement agencies across California starting from October 1st.
The California governor’s office plans to allocate grants of up to $23.6 million to 41 police departments, sheriff’s offices, and a probation department. These funds will support initiatives such as increasing arrests, establishing new task forces, and implementing advanced surveillance technology.
Additionally, 13 district attorneys’ offices will receive up to $2.05 million each to establish dedicated teams focused on prosecuting organized retail theft.
A Nationwide Issue
Retail theft is not limited to California. Across the country, business owners, both large and small, have been grappling with increased crime and theft. Many feel abandoned by lawmakers who have done little to address the problem.
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento have been identified as ”hot spots” for organized retail crime by the National Retail Federation. The rise in theft has even led to the closure of several businesses in these cities.
Newsom’s commitment to combating retail crime is not new. He has previously highlighted the $800 million in funding allocated in the state’s annual budget to improve public safety and crack down on retail crime.
