Military Officials Remain Confident in CV-22⁤ Osprey Aircraft Despite Deadly Crashes

Military officials are standing firm in their⁤ confidence in the CV-22‌ Osprey aircraft, despite recent deadly crashes. One such crash ‍occurred last month, resulting in the tragic deaths of three Marines.

Gen. Eric Smith, the acting Marine Corps commandant and assistant commandant, has ordered ‍a servicewide review in response to these incidents, which is expected to ⁢be completed soon.

Tragic Losses and Ongoing Investigations

In late ⁢August, Marine Corps Cpl. Spencer R. Collart, Capt. Eleanor V. LeBeau, and ‌Maj. ⁣Tobin J. Lewis lost their lives in an Osprey crash on Melville Island, Australia. Twenty others were ‍injured in the incident, and the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

Brig. Gen. Michael Conley, the Air Force Special Operations Command director of operations, expressed his condolences and emphasized the continued confidence in the aircraft, stating, “We remain confident in the aircraft.”

Lt.‌ Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, the commander of‌ Air Force Special Operations Command, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the mitigation steps taken and the unique capabilities of the CV-22 in the special operations community.

Previous Incidents and Investigations

Another ‍Osprey crash occurred in June 2022 in California, resulting in the deaths of five Marines. The investigation‍ revealed that the crash was caused by a dual hard clutch engagement (HCE) and subsequent system failures,‌ leading to ‍a catastrophic loss of thrust ⁤and⁢ an unrecoverable departure from controlled flight.

Despite these incidents, ⁣Deputy Pentagon‌ spokeswoman Sabrina Singh affirmed the department’s confidence in the Osprey.

Overall, military officials remain resolute in their belief in the ⁤CV-22 Osprey ‍aircraft, recognizing its importance and unique capabilities in fulfilling operational requirements.
