Biden to invest $100M in improving EV chargers.
The Biden Administration’s Plan to Aid Electric Car Drivers
The Biden administration has announced a $100 million initiative to support America’s electric car drivers. The funding, sourced from the bipartisan infrastructure bill of 2021, will be used to repair and replace thousands of chargers used for electric vehicles.
Addressing Charger Unavailability
The funding aims to address the issue of chargers classified as “temporarily unavailable.” These chargers, numbering around 6,000, may be affected by power issues, routine maintenance, or vandalism. The Wall Street Journal reports that there are already approximately 150,000 public charging ports available.
National Network of Electric Vehicle Chargers
The Biden administration has set a goal of establishing a national network of 500,000 electric vehicle chargers by 2030.
Tesla’s Success in Charging Station Reliability
According to a study by J.D. Power, Tesla’s charging stations have a low failure rate of 4%, compared to 20% for other charging stations. The study also found that 61% of shoppers were considering purchasing an electric vehicle, with charging station unavailability being a major concern for 49% of those not considering an EV.
Overcoming Charging Challenges
While most electric vehicle owners primarily charge their vehicles at home, the exceptional use case of long road trips remains a concern for potential buyers. Stewart Stropp, J.D. Power’s executive director of E.V. intelligence, explains that addressing this concern is crucial to encourage more shoppers to consider electric vehicles.
Introducing Zooz Power’s Ultra-Fast Charging System
Zooz Power, an Israeli company, has recently launched its first charging system in the United States. Located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, this system showcases Zooz Power’s technology, which can fully recharge batteries within 15 minutes by converting electrical energy into kinetic energy. Zooz CEO Boaz Weizer expresses excitement about this milestone and mentions pilot projects with notable organizations.
Exploring Alternative Solutions
In addition to traditional charging infrastructure, developers have been working on innovative solutions to address the energy needs of electric vehicles. Some have been experimenting with electrified roads, where vehicles can charge while in motion or stopped. Electreon Wireless, an Israeli company, has successfully tested a Toyota RAV4 hybrid on a partially electrified track, demonstrating the potential of this technology.
