Trump hails Romney’s decision to not seek re-election as Senate ‘great news for America’
Former President Donald Trump Celebrates Sen. Mitt Romney’s Decision
Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his excitement over Sen. Mitt Romney’s announcement that he would not seek reelection in the Senate. Trump declared it “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA, THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.”
Trump’s Thoughts on Romney’s Decision
“FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA, THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION. A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump and Romney have had a tumultuous relationship over the years. Trump initially endorsed Romney during his 2012 presidential campaign, but their differences became apparent as time went on.
In 2015, when Trump announced his own presidential campaign, Romney criticized his remarks on illegal immigrants and Sen. John McCain. Trump fired back, even claiming that Romney “choked” in the 2012 election. The tension between them reached its peak in 2016 when Romney called Trump a ”phony” and a “fraud.”
Despite their past conflicts, Romney congratulated Trump on his victory in the 2016 presidential election and even met with him during the transition period. Trump endorsed Romney when he ran for the Senate in 2018, stating that he would make a great senator.
During Romney’s time as a senator, he often criticized Trump within the Republican Party. He gained attention for having a secret Twitter account under the name “Pierre Delecto,” where he expressed his dissent towards Trump. Romney also made history as the first senator to vote to convict a president from his own party in an impeachment trial, voting to convict Trump on abuse of power in 2020 and during Trump’s second trial following the Capitol riot in 2021.
Overall, Trump’s reaction to Romney’s decision not to seek reelection reflects their complex history and the ongoing dynamics within the Republican Party.
