Oklahoma authorities seek BTK’s hidden trophies.
Authorities in Oklahoma Search for BTK’s Hidden “Trophies”
Authorities in Oklahoma are on a mission to uncover the hidden “trophies” of the notorious serial killer known as “BTK.” The search comes after the formation of a new task force dedicated to solving cold cases linked to the killer.
“We have locations provided to us by BTK where he says he has other trophies hidden. We are in the process of working to go try to recover those items,” Sheriff Eddie Virden said, according to CNN.
The hunt for BTK’s “trophies” began with a letter he wrote from prison in 2008. In the letter, the serial killer, whose real name is Dennis Rader, revealed that he had buried various items beneath the floor of his backyard shed. Recently, investigators discovered some of these items on the property where Rader once lived with his family. Among the recovered items were jewelry, clothing, and personal belongings of his victims.
The Osage County Sheriff’s Office announced the formation of a new National BTK Task Force, which brings together experts and resources from law enforcement agencies in Oklahoma, Kansas, and federal agencies. The task force aims to solve a 1976 cold case that may be connected to BTK.
In August, Rader became the prime suspect in the 1976 disappearance of Cynthia Dawn Kinney and the 1990 murder of Shawna Beth Garber. Investigators suspect that Kinney’s body may be buried in a barn near the Kansas-Oklahoma border, based on an anonymous call received by the police years ago. The task force is now focused on solving Kinney’s disappearance.
“My father absolutely loves barns and silos,” revealed Rader’s daughter, Kerri Rawson, in an interview with CNN. “Now we’re driving around trying to find those [locations] by my memory and noting them because we need to go see, is there anybody missing or buried there.”
Earlier this month, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office released decades-old sketches drawn by Rader. These chilling sketches depict women bound and gagged, providing potential clues to additional crimes committed by the serial killer. Rader, whose nickname stands for “Bind, Torture, Kill,” is currently serving multiple life sentences for the murders he confessed to during the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s.
The search for BTK’s hidden “trophies” and the investigation into potential additional victims continue as authorities work tirelessly to bring closure to the families affected by this heinous killer.
