Mitt Romney leads older senators stepping down, discusses age.

Sen. Mitt Romney Calls for New Generation of Leaders

In a recent interview with Politico, Sen. Mitt⁢ Romney (R-UT) made a bold suggestion for older members ‍of Congress: it’s time⁢ to pass the torch to a new generation of⁤ leaders. At 76 years old, Romney reflected on his legacy and time in⁢ Congress, ⁣announcing that he would not seek reelection in 2024. He cited his‍ age as the reason behind his decision and encouraged other senior political leaders to follow suit.

A Wave of ‌Retirements

Romney is not alone ⁢in his decision. Several other older senators have also announced their⁤ retirements. Sens. Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tom Carper (D-DE), and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) have all chosen to step aside this Congress. Additionally,‍ there are increasing calls for senators like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to consider retirement ⁣due to recent health concerns.

“I look at Biden ‍and I look at McConnell, and I say, ‘OK, these are guys in their early 80s,” Romney expressed. “I’d be in my mid-80s. ‌It’s not like I have to have this job for my ‍ego and my self-esteem.”

A‌ Call for New Presidential Nominees

Romney’s call for new leadership extends to the presidency as well. He believes neither President Joe Biden ⁣nor former President Donald Trump should be their parties’ nominees. “I don’t see the leadership coming⁣ from either person,” he stated. However, he did acknowledge the ⁣possibility of‌ regret⁢ if his party ends up nominating⁣ someone other than Trump.

Romney also referenced a piece by Washington Post columnist David‌ Ignatius, who argued against Biden running ‌for reelection. He expressed his hope that “the White House will listen to David Ignatius.”

Anti-Trump‍ Stance

While Romney has positioned himself as ⁢a leading anti-Trump figure‍ within the GOP, he indicated that he is not eager to engage in a tough‍ primary battle against⁢ a pro-Trump Republican. “You don’t spend six years of your life‌ just ⁣to prove a point,” he remarked, referring to a hypothetical matchup with a ‍pro-Trump challenger.
