Ex-Sheriff Alex Villanueva runs for LA County Supervisor.
Former Sheriff Alex Villanueva Announces Candidacy for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has officially declared his candidacy for the District 4 seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He will be challenging incumbent Janice Hahn in the upcoming March 2024 primary.
“The Board of Supervisors had a responsibility to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of the county and all of its residents,” Mr. Villanueva emphasized during his press conference. “In that regard, [members of the current board] have failed absolutely. I cannot find a measure of success in any activity the board is engaged in.”

Mr. Villanueva’s campaign will focus on addressing critical issues such as crime, safety, homelessness, and what he refers to as “county corruption.” He believes that the decisions made by the current board members have led to these problems.
“They’re spending $44 billion of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars, and you have no idea where the money is being spent,” he expressed.
Under his campaign slogan ”SAVE LA 2024,” Mr. Villanueva aims to steer Los Angeles away from the path of decline experienced by cities like San Francisco.
During an interview with The Epoch Times, Mr. Villanueva stressed the need to change the county government’s approach to homelessness. He believes that flawed policies are attracting individuals from across the country to Los Angeles.
“The entire homeless policy is based on ideology. It’s not based on facts, reality, and human nature,” he explained. “When you enable dependency and normalize deviancy, people are going to take advantage of it. They’re going to come to L.A. to smoke dope and basically defecate on the sidewalk in front of kids.”
Mr. Villanueva also highlighted the connection between the growing homeless issue and the rising crime rate.
“Prop 47 needs to be repealed. We need to revert back to a standard on law and order, and we have to reassert that with law enforcement on the streets and DA in the court,” he asserted.
Proposition 47, passed in 2014, raised the felony limit for property theft and removed provisions for repeat offenders, contributing to the rise in crime.
Expressing his concern for the county’s deteriorating state, Mr. Villanueva stated, “I cannot stand by in good conscience and watch my own community suffer because of bad career politicians.”
At the press conference, retired Montebello Police Department Chief Garry Couso-Vasquez voiced his support for Mr. Villanueva, emphasizing the need for unity and strong leadership.
Since 2020, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has been composed entirely of female members. Mr. Villanueva’s candidacy aims to challenge this dynamic, which began after Mark Ridley-Thomas, previously on the board, was convicted of federal bribery and conspiracy charges.
Having served as the Los Angeles County Sheriff for one term, Mr. Villanueva won the position in the 2018 election against then-sheriff Jim McDonnell. However, he lost the seat to former Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna in the November 2022 election.
Janice Hahn, the incumbent, was elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020 to represent the 4th District, which encompasses various areas in Los Angeles County.
