At the all-female⁢ St. ‍Catherine University in St.⁤ Paul, 19-year-old Keanu Labatte was apprehended on Sunday after his girlfriend managed to escape and‌ call campus security.

According to a criminal complaint ⁣obtained by KSTB, Labatte traveled 140 miles to the university from Granite Falls to visit the young woman he had ‍been dating for two⁣ months. However, ⁤their romantic weekend took‍ a⁣ dark turn when he discovered incriminating messages⁢ on her phone.

To prevent her from seeking help, Labatte allegedly confiscated her phone ⁣and kept it for days. Prosecutors ⁢claim that he repeatedly assaulted and choked her, making terrifying threats against ⁤her ‍and her family.

In a particularly ⁢disturbing act, Labatte is accused of forcing⁤ the young woman⁣ to⁢ lie in ⁣a bathtub, covering her face with a washcloth, and pouring water over ⁤her face, a form of ⁢torture known as “waterboarding.” This tactic is designed‍ to make the victim⁤ feel like they ‍are⁣ drowning.

Labatte also brandished a knife and warned her that he had used it to harm a previous girlfriend.

The unidentified woman described the torture as leaving her “feeling terrified to the point that she would just lay⁤ next to Labatte‍ and⁢ not move for fear ‍of what he would do to her,” according⁤ to court documents.

After‌ three days of abuse, the victim convinced Labatte to let⁤ her ⁢leave the dormitory⁢ to get food from the⁤ cafeteria on⁤ Sunday morning. However, instead of going ⁤to the⁢ café, she went straight to campus security, who immediately contacted the‌ police upon seeing her injuries.

Authorities found a folding ‌knife and a wet towel in Labatte’s dorm room, leading⁤ to his arrest. The victim also revealed that⁤ Labatte had moved her mattress to ‍the ‌floor ‌to‍ muffle any noise during the sexual assaults.

Labatte, who ‍was already on probation for violating‍ a restraining ⁤order, now faces five felony charges, including criminal sexual behavior, domestic assault⁢ by ⁤strangulation, and⁤ making violent threats.

The maximum sentence for domestic ⁢abuse‌ and threats of violence is 3 to 5 years in jail, while each criminal sex charge carries a‍ maximum sentence of ⁢up to 30⁢ years in prison.

A representative from St. Catherine University declined to comment on how the ⁤abuse went unreported for several days, citing ‌the victim’s right to privacy and the ongoing investigation.

“It is ⁤our policy at St. Catherine University not to issue any comment that would‌ affect student confidentiality or⁤ potentially re-traumatize individuals. As this is an ongoing investigation, we do not wish to jeopardize the ‌integrity of the ⁤case as it develops,” said representative Sarah Voigt in an email.
