VIDEO: Another prominent Democrat refuses to endorse Kamala Harris as the ideal running mate for Joe Biden.
Awkward Responses from Democratic Representatives on Kamala Harris as Biden’s Running Mate
A day after Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) refused to say whether Vice President Kamala Harris is the best running mate for President Joe Biden, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D., Md.) struggled to answer the same question.
“That’s President Biden’s choice and I think she’s an excellent running mate for President Biden,” Raskin told CNN’s Jake Tapper before an awkward throat clearing. “I don’t know what more needs to be said about that.”
When Jake Tapper later pressed him to give a yes or no on whether she’s the best choice, Raskin said, “I don’t know what else I can say other than she is an excellent running mate and an excellent vice president.”
Tapper noted that Raskin could say “yes.” But he never did throughout the segment, continuing to say she’s an “excellent choice.”
Raskin later took to Twitter to clean up his position.
“Vice President Harris is a historic and effective VP, and clearly the best match and running mate for President Biden,” he said.
The answer comes a day after Pelosi dodged the same topic.
When asked during a Wednesday appearance on CNN whether Harris is the best choice for veep, Pelosi said Biden “thinks so and that’s what matters.” When asked again, she said, “She’s the vice president of the United States.”
Pelosi added that the nature of the job is that ”you don’t do that much.”
Pelosi, who announced earlier this week that she is seeking reelection next year when she will be 84 years old, further hyped Harris up as “politically astute” and avoided criticizing her.
Politico reported this year that Democratic officials won’t criticize Harris out of fear of being called racist or sexist.
Some writers have begun calling for Biden to drop Harris on the ticket. Others, including Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, have explicitly called for Biden not to run.
What concerns arise from the hesitation and reluctance displayed by Democratic representatives in endorsing Kamala Harris, and what does it suggest about the party’s unified support for her
D, “I think she’s a fantastic choice.” However, his response seemed hesitant and lacked conviction, indicating a level of discomfort in openly endorsing Harris as Biden’s running mate.
This hesitancy is not unique to Raskin; it appears that several Democratic representatives have been struggling to provide a confident and unambiguous response when asked about Harris as Biden’s running mate. This is a concerning matter, as it raises questions about the unity and cohesion within the Democratic Party.
Nancy Pelosi, one of the most influential and prominent Democratic figures, dodged the question altogether, refusing to state whether Harris is the best choice for Biden. This evasion of a straightforward answer is not only perplexing but also suggests a lack of confidence in Harris’ ability to effectively fulfill the role of a running mate.
The awkward responses from these Democratic representatives highlight a deeper issue within the party – a divide in opinion and perhaps a degree of apprehension towards Harris. This raises concerns about the extent to which they truly believe in her capabilities and suitability for the role.
It is important to note that Harris’s selection as Biden’s running mate was celebrated by many, with expectations of her bringing experience, diversity, and a fresh perspective to the table. However, the awkward responses from some Democratic representatives cast a shadow of doubt on the party’s unified support for Harris.
The hesitation and reluctance seen in these responses can be interpreted in different ways. It is possible that some representatives are still adjusting to the idea of Harris as the vice president, while others may have reservations about her policy positions or political strategies. Whatever the reasons may be, it is clear that there is a lack of consensus and a certain level of discomfort when discussing Harris as Biden’s running mate.
In contrast, the Republican Party has shown a unified front in their support for their candidates. This stark difference in response further highlights the need for the Democratic Party to address any internal divisions and concerns to present a united and confident front to the public.
Ultimately, the decision of whether Harris is the best choice for Biden lies with the President himself. However, it is important for the Democratic Party to stand firmly behind their chosen running mate, not only to project a united front but also to instill confidence in their voters. Awkward responses from Democratic representatives do not serve this purpose and may reflect poorly on the party as a whole.
In conclusion, the awkward responses from Democratic representatives regarding Kamala Harris as Biden’s running mate raise concerns about the unity and confidence within the party. The hesitancy, reluctance, and evasion in endorsing Harris expose a deeper divide and discomfort that need to be addressed. To project a united front, the Democratic Party must overcome these obstacles and present a more coherent and confident stance on the matter.
