Tuberculosis Exposure at Chuze Fitness Locations in San Diego County
In an effort to ensure the safety of its employees and members, San Diego County’s Tuberculosis Program has partnered with Chuze Fitness to notify individuals who may have been exposed to tuberculosis (TB) at Chuze Fitness-Mission Valley and Chuze Fitness-Chula Vista. This collaborative effort was announced on September 15.
It is important to note that there is currently no evidence linking these two exposures, and they are unrelated to other recent TB exposures in the community, such as the case reported at San Diego State University on September 14.
The potential exposure dates at the Mission Valley location (1233 Camino Del Rio S) span from January 4 to February 22 of this year. At the Chula Vista location (1030 3rd Ave.), the potential exposure dates are from February 1 to April 30.

Individuals who are believed to be at the highest risk of exposure at the Mission Valley location have already been notified. However, specific members at risk from exposures at the Chula Vista location have not been identified. It is suspected that members who attended the location during the afternoons are at the highest risk.
“Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss,” explained Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county public health officer. “While most people do not immediately fall ill after exposure to tuberculosis, they may develop latent TB infection. Without treatment, some individuals may become sick in the future, even years later. Blood tests and skin tests are effective in determining whether someone has been infected.”
Diagnosing TB can take several months, and during this time, individuals may unknowingly expose others to the disease. TB is an airborne disease transmitted through inhalation of bacteria in the air. Prolonged indoor exposure to an infected person increases the risk of infection.
If you require more information about this potential exposure, please contact the County TB Control Program at 619-692-8621.
According to county data, the number of active TB cases in San Diego County has decreased since the early 1990s and has remained stable in recent years. In 2020, there were 192 reported cases, followed by 201 cases in 2021. In 2022, San Diego County reported 208 cases of active TB disease.

Tuberculosis is a contagious lung infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can spread through the air when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. However, it is important to note that TB is not easily transmitted and requires prolonged exposure to an infected person in a confined space.
Upon learning of the potential exposure, Chuze Fitness took immediate action to address the situation. They have worked closely with the Tuberculosis Program to identify individuals who may have been exposed and provided guidance on testing and treatment options.
Chuze Fitness members and employees who visited the Mission Valley or Chula Vista locations during the specified dates are encouraged to be vigilant for any symptoms of TB, which include a persistent cough, chest pain, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. If any symptoms are present, individuals are advised to seek medical attention and inform their healthcare provider about the potential exposure.
Testing for TB is available through healthcare providers or at the Tuberculosis Control Program’s clinic. Individuals who believe they may have been exposed can call the Tuberculosis Program at (619) 692-8621 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
The Tuberculosis Program and Chuze Fitness are committed to ensuring the health and safety of the community. They will continue to work together to identify any additional potential exposures and disseminate information promptly to those affected.
