Trump defends 2020 election challenge as his decision.
Former President Donald Trump Challenges Election Results
After the 2020 elections, former President Donald Trump sought advice from various sources before making the decision to formally challenge the results. In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker, he discussed the factors that influenced his choice.
“I was listening to different people. And when I added it all up, the election was rigged,” he asserted. “It was my decision.”
During the interview, Trump and Welker discussed the criminal indictments against him, particularly the one in Washington related to his actions in challenging the election. Trump expressed his lack of respect for certain lawyers in his administration, including former Attorney General Bill Barr, whom he accused of acting out of fear of impeachment.
“But I did respect others,” he added.
Trump emphasized that challenging the election was his own decision, based on his belief that it was rigged. He initially planned to release evidence after the Georgia indictment, but his current legal counsel advised him to save it for upcoming trials.
When asked if he believed he lost the 2020 elections, Trump confidently stated, “I say I won the election.”
Welker questioned why he listened to ”outside lawyers” with “crazy theories,” to which Trump responded, “You know who I listen to? Myself. I saw what happened. I watched that election, and I thought the election was over at 10 o’clock in the evening.”
“It was my decision,” he reiterated.
January 6
Trump also clarified his role on January 6, 2021, regarding the Capitol breach. He stated that he had little involvement and was asked to speak as the President of the United States.
Special counsel Jack Smith is prosecuting the Washington case against Trump, alleging conspiracy and obstruction charges related to the events of January 6. Trump defended his actions, describing the crowd as peaceful and patriotic. He revealed that he had considered going into the Capitol but was advised against it by the Secret Service.
Trump blamed then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the breach, claiming she turned down his offer of additional National Guard support. He criticized the treatment of those present and highlighted the discrepancy in prosecuting rioters from other incidents.
When asked about his campaign slogan, “I am your retribution,” Trump explained that he aimed to protect people and ensure fairness in the justice system. He expressed openness to pardoning those wrongly imprisoned and emphasized his intention to appoint an attorney general who would be tough on crime and fair.
