The U.S. Marine Corps needs your help! They are searching for a lost F-35B Lightning II Jet that went missing after a pilot ejected during a “mishap” near Charleston, SC.
A spokeswoman from Joint Base Charleston confirmed that the pilot safely ejected from the plane on Sunday, but as of now, the jet remains missing. This F-35B Lightning II Jet is valued at around $80 million and belongs to a training squadron from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based in North Carolina.
“If you have any information that may help our recovery teams locate the F-35, please call the Base Defense Operations Center at 843-963-3600,” the air base wrote on X, formally known as Twitter.
Lawmakers were critical of the air base asking the public to assist in its search of the missing fighter jet.
It is unclear what the “mishap” entailed that caused the pilot to have to eject, and why the fighter jet ultimately went missing.

A missing F-35B Lightning II Jet. Some argued that it reflects a lack of capability and readiness within the military. However, others believe that the collaboration between the military and the public can be a valuable asset in locating the missing aircraft.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the pilot safely ejected from the F-35B Lightning II Jet during a “mishap” near Charleston, SC. Despite the successful ejection, the jet has yet to be found. Valued at approximately $80 million, this particular jet belongs to a training squadron from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based in North Carolina.
Joint Base Charleston, in coordination with MCAS BeaufortSC, took to Twitter to request public assistance in locating the missing aircraft. They posted a tweet asking anyone with information to contact the Base Defense Operations Center. This call for public involvement raised concerns among lawmakers who questioned the military’s capabilities and readiness to handle such situations.
The military’s reliance on public assistance may be seen as a sign of weakness to some, but others argue that it highlights a collaborative approach that can prove beneficial. In today’s interconnected world, information can be obtained and shared rapidly, increasing the chances of locating the missing aircraft. Public involvement has played successful roles in various investigations and search operations in the past.
Furthermore, the military often turns to various resources, including civilian search and rescue teams, during emergencies or natural disasters. These collaborations between the military and civilians have proven effective in saving lives and minimizing damage. The same principle can be applied to the search for the missing F-35B Lightning II Jet.
Moreover, the public may possess crucial information that could aid in locating the aircraft. Witnesses may have seen or heard something that could provide valuable leads. With technology allowing for easy dissemination of information, the public’s input could potentially expedite the search efforts.
It is crucial to emphasize that calling upon the public for assistance does not indicate a lack of capability on the part of the military. Rather, it represents a proactive and inclusive approach to problem-solving. By engaging with the public, the military can harness collective knowledge and resources, potentially enhancing the overall effectiveness of search and recovery operations.
In the case of the missing F-35B Lightning II Jet, it is imperative that all available resources and expertise be utilized to ensure its recovery. The collaboration between the military and the public can prove to be a decisive factor in locating the aircraft and preventing any potential threats or security breaches.
As the search for the missing jet continues, it is hoped that the assistance of the public, in conjunction with the military’s expertise, will lead to a successful outcome. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation and collaboration in addressing complex challenges, even within the realm of national security.
