DOJ’s treatment led J6 defendant to suicide: ‘They shattered him,’ says relative.
Investigative journalist Lara Logan uncovers untold stories of Capitol incursion defendants
In her new series, “The Rest of the Story with Lara Logan,” Logan aims to shed light on the experiences of defendants charged in the January 6, 2021, Capitol incursion that have been overlooked by the mainstream media.
The first episode, which was posted on Truth in Media’s social media account, delves into the story of Matthew Perna, a Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty to offenses related to the incursion and tragically took his own life while awaiting sentencing.
The treatment of Perna and other Capitol incursion defendants by the Department of Justice is in stark contrast to the leniency shown to leftist rioters involved in the Portland courthouse attacks in 2020.
While federal prosecutors arranged for deferred resolution agreements for many Portland defendants, resulting in no criminal records, over 1,000 January 6 defendants, including Perna, have faced harsh charges and potential prison sentences.
Logan emphasizes that Perna was not an insurrectionist and had no plans to overthrow the government. He simply exercised his First Amendment right to voice his concerns about the 2020 election.
Matthew Perna was a Bernie Sanders fan until Trump came along. Then he was treated as a terrorist.

Perna faced charges of unlawfully entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and felony obstruction of Congress, carrying a potential 20-year prison sentence and a hefty fine.
According to Perna’s friend, the additional charges added by federal prosecutors weighed heavily on him, leading to anxiety, sleep problems, and even coughing up blood.
Perna’s aunt expressed how the DOJ’s treatment completely broke him and robbed him of his spirit and hope for the future. In a note he left behind, Perna stated that he sacrificed his freedom and took his own life in despair.
Logan’s series aims to uncover the truth behind the events of January 6, 2021, and provide a platform for the stories of Capitol incursion defendants that have been overshadowed.
Future episodes will feature the stories of other defendants, including an Army Special Forces veteran who was targeted after exposing the tactics of the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Logan’s approach to the series is rooted in old-fashioned, truth-seeking journalism, and the second part of the Matthew Perna story is set to be released soon.

What potential constitutional rights violations have been alleged by defendants in custody during the Capitol incursion
, but rather a passionate supporter of then-president Donald Trump who found himself caught up in the chaos of the Capitol incursion. She highlights the fact that Perna’s guilty plea was largely a result of pressure from the government and fear of a lengthy prison sentence, rather than a true admission of guilt.
Through interviews with Perna’s family and friends, Logan paints a picture of a man who was deeply devoted to his family, his community, and his country. He was described as a hardworking individual who always sought to make a positive impact in his community. His family, still grieving his loss, feels that the government’s treatment of him was unjust and disproportionate.
Logan’s investigation also exposes the media’s biased coverage of the Capitol incursion defendants. She reveals that while the media may portray them as violent extremists, many of them were non-violent protesters who simply exercised their right to protest. She stresses the importance of distinguishing between those who engaged in violent acts and those who were simply present during the incursion.
Furthermore, Logan uncovers disturbing testimonies from some defendants who allege mistreatment and abuse while in the custody of law enforcement. These stories shed light on potential violations of their constitutional rights and raise questions about the fairness of the legal process they have been subjected to.
The purpose of Logan’s series is not to defend or condone the actions of those involved in the Capitol incursion but rather to provide a more nuanced understanding of their stories. By examining the experiences and motivations of defendants like Matthew Perna, she aims to challenge the mainstream narrative and encourage a more balanced and fair portrayal of the events that took place on January 6, 2021.
Ultimately, Logan’s investigation underscores the importance of rigorous and unbiased journalism in uncovering the truth. It serves as a reminder that media outlets have a responsibility to present all sides of a story, even when it may be uncomfortable or go against prevailing narratives. By shedding light on the untold stories of Capitol incursion defendants, she hopes to contribute to a more informed and nuanced public discourse about this pivotal moment in American history.
