Report: Matt Gaetz, Republican, to Depart Congress Soon.

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida Eyeing Run for Governor in 2026

According to reports, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida⁢ is planning to run ‍for governor of the state in 2026. While he has dismissed these reports as “clickbait,” he has not explicitly denied them.

NBC News revealed on Monday that Gaetz, a fourth-term congressman, is widely expected to launch a gubernatorial bid in his home state in two years.

Florida Governor Ron⁢ DeSantis, who is currently ⁣the ‌No. 2 GOP presidential candidate for 2024, is in his second term and⁣ is ineligible to run for a third term.

DeSantis’ resounding re-election victory ⁢last fall has solidified Florida as a Republican stronghold after ‌years of being a battleground state.

NBC News reported that⁤ Gaetz’s potential run ⁢for governor has become a major‌ topic of discussion in political circles within the state.

“Gaetz has long been considered on the shortlist of those who will ‍try to⁢ seek the Republican nomination for governor, a field that is⁢ expected ‌to be crowded because ⁣the incumbent, Ron DeSantis, ⁤will be facing term limits,”

the outlet said.⁤ “DeSantis is currently running for president but would ‌have two years remaining in the governor’s mansion if that run falls⁤ short.”

According to NBC⁣ News, ⁤four individuals who attended an event in Tallahassee on Saturday claimed that Gaetz strongly hinted at his intention to run for governor.

One person, described as a lobbyist, stated, “There was a lot of ‌talk about it at the reception last⁢ night, and Gaetz ⁢was telling people to‌ basically expect him⁣ to be in.”

Another individual said, “He’s 100 percent in… I think Gaetz is an instant front-runner, and ‌from what I hear, he’s⁣ already won the Trump primary,” implying ⁣that former President Donald Trump will endorse him.

When asked about the speculation surrounding a potential ‍gubernatorial ‌bid by ⁢ Insider, Gaetz did not⁢ rule out running but dismissed the NBC News story‌ as “overblown clickbait.”

Insider also reported that Gaetz claimed he had been relentlessly urged by dozens of state⁤ lawmakers to run for governor.

Furthermore, Gaetz ‍took a swipe at ‌Republican Rep. ‌ Byron Donalds of Florida, who is reportedly working on a resolution to prevent⁤ a government ⁤shutdown ‍later this month.

“I‌ wasn’t focused on ‌any of ‍that [gubernatorial] talk, though,”

Gaetz said.⁣ “My sole mission ‌right now is⁤ to kill the Donalds ‍CR that funds Ukraine, ⁢Jack Smith,‍ and a weaponized Biden government.”

Gaetz, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016, has easily won re-election in Florida’s⁣ 1st ‍Congressional District, which encompasses⁤ a ‌significant portion of the state’s Panhandle.

‍How would Matt Gaetz’s national profile and strong base of support within‌ the Republican Party influence his candidacy for governor in 2026

Stay tuned for a big announcement from him soon.”⁣

Despite ‍these reports,⁤ Gaetz‍ has denied any concrete plans‍ for a gubernatorial ‌bid in ⁣2026.⁢ He took to⁢ Twitter to dismiss the rumors, calling them “clickbait” and stating that his focus ‌is currently on serving his constituents in Congress.

However, Gaetz’s potential run for governor will‌ undoubtedly be closely watched and⁤ speculated upon, as he has gained national attention and a strong following among ⁤conservative Republicans. Known for his outspoken ‍and controversial style, Gaetz has become a prominent figure within ‌the Republican Party.

With the current political landscape ⁣in Florida, Gaetz’s bid for governor could‌ be⁣ met with both enthusiasm‍ and skepticism. The⁣ state has long been a critical battleground in presidential elections,‍ and ‍a Republican stronghold in recent years.

If Gaetz were to officially⁢ announce his candidacy, he would likely face a highly competitive field, as other Republicans⁣ vie for the nomination. However, Gaetz’s strong base of support ⁢and national profile could give him ‍an advantage in ‌the race.

Furthermore, if Gaetz were to secure the Republican nomination, ⁤he would potentially face a ⁣tough general election against the ⁣Democratic candidate. Florida has seen an influx of new residents, including many from more liberal-leaning states, which could ‍impact the political landscape of the state.

Regardless of whether Gaetz ultimately decides to‌ run for governor in 2026 ⁣or not,⁢ his ‍potential candidacy has captured the⁣ attention ‍of both⁤ political observers⁢ and the ‌public. It remains to be seen what the future⁤ holds‌ for Gaetz, but ⁤one thing⁤ is certain – he is a force to be reckoned with in Florida politics.
