14th Migrant Bus from Texas Reaches LA
Another Bus of Migrants Arrives in Los Angeles
On September 19, downtown Los Angeles welcomed yet another bus carrying migrants from Texas. This marks the 14th arrival since June 14, and the city has been actively working with various organizations and departments to handle the situation.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) confirmed that the bus carried 40 asylum seekers from El Salvador and Venezuela, including 12 families and 14 children.
CHIRLA, a member of the L.A. Welcomes Collective, which consists of nonprofit organizations, faith groups, and city and county services, is actively responding to the arrival of migrant buses.
“We prioritize people over drama or politics. Together, the city, county, and nonprofits will continue to coordinate and support each other until our new neighbors feel they have a chance to start anew,” CHIRLA posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Since the first bus arrived, Los Angeles has welcomed over 500 migrants from Texas, as Texas Governor Greg Abbott continues to orchestrate these trips under Operation Lone Star. The operation aims to address the overwhelming influx of immigrants, illegal drug trade, and human smuggling along the Texas-Mexico border.
According to Mr. Abbott, Operation Lone Star has resulted in significant apprehensions, criminal arrests, and the seizure of illegal substances. He emphasizes that Texas is taking action to secure the border in the absence of President Biden’s involvement.
Mayor Karen Bass has expressed frustration over the lack of communication from Mr. Abbott’s office regarding the shipments. She believes that if his concerns were genuine, there should be better coordination between the governments.
The Los Angeles City Council has taken steps to establish the city as a sanctuary city, and they have also called for an investigation into potential crimes related to the shipments. The situation remains complex, but Los Angeles continues to navigate the challenges and provide support to the arriving migrants.
How is Los Angeles preparing to accommodate the influx of asylum seekers and provide support and resources?
